CREATION

Artist Statement

Personal creations can become a part of oneself, as many take pride in what they make themselves. In art, when something is made from scratch, there is a feeling of accomplishment present when it is completed and something new is brought into the world, only previously seen in the imagination. Upon first thought for this prompt, I wanted to capture the sense of pride one has for something they have thought of and made themselves, which led me to think about how artists feel about their work when it is finalized. My work displays an artist who has allowed  their creations to become apart of their personal identity, and in turn themselves.

When creating this work, I wanted to use actual artwork from someone who considered themselves to be an artist. I found someone who was willing to let me photograph their work as well as themself and took a studio portrait of them. From this, the rest of the work was done in photoshop. I strategically selected which pieces of their art to include on which part of their face, using their blue-tinted work where the subject’s eyes were because she had blue eyes and busier pieces on her cheeks because they were bare. I chose to crop the photo so it featured the subject’s face only to enhance how her creations became her identity, as a face is normally first regarded as what identity is.

My work is representative of how one’s creations and things they bring into this world bring pride and become part of their identity. While taking this photo, I learned how to overlay images on to faces and blend them in a way that the face would still be visible.
